Secondary Literacy   

Our Mission:

Every student who enters the Rapid City Area Schools will have the best possible resources and opportunities to become proficiently literate.

To facilitate that mission, the Secondary Literacy Office works with Instructional Support Teachers (ISTs) from every secondary building.  In addition, the Secondary Literacy Office maintains a professional library of books, dvd’s, and videos.  These resources are available for check out to all RCAS staff.

The ISTs are Instructional Coaches who collaborate one-on-one with all content area teachers, facilitate study groups of teachers, and make whole-faculty presentations.  The ISTs also study with ELA Leadership, a group of teachers representing all middle schools and high schools.  The ELA leadership includes teachers of both reading and writing.  Each semester this office offers classes to all RCAS staff for professional development which can be taken for college credit, state recertification credit, or career enhancement.

The purpose of coaching is to improve student learning by providing continuous, relevant, and job-embedded support to teachers.  Rapid City Area Schools follow these coaching best practices:

 

·Coaching requires specialized knowledge.

·Time working with teachers is the focus of coaching.

·Coaches serve as collaborative partners.

·Coaching that supports student learning focuses on best practices.

·Coaching must be both intentional and opportunistic.

·Coaches must be instructional leaders.

·Coaches build capacity over time.
